What the new 2026/27 season tells us about in-play football betting

Will Westcott Business Development Director at Genius Sports, reviews the opening matches of the EFL and other leagues. He explains why the speed and relevance of sportsbooks’ in-play football product is set to be this year’s big differentiator.

So soon after a busy World Cup summer, I wasn’t ready for this weekend’s swift return of domestic football – but that quickly changed.

An action-packed opening to the 2026/27 season saw Arsenal dismantle Man City in the first half of the Community Shield, Lens stun PSG in the French Super Cup, and the EFL returned with Middlesbrough, Burnley and Cardiff staging late comebacks.

Last but not least, a surprising victory for Watford on Sunday capped off a weekend that reminded me why the start of the football season brings such excitement.

For many online European operators, the quality, relevance and speed of their in-play product are set to be this season’s big football differentiators.

It boils down to improving the customer experience, with reduced market suspensions and bet delays, and more contextual betting opportunities, to become the go-to sportsbooks for the big games.

A more intuitive in-play football experience

"What separates a good in-play football product from a great one is packaging and delivering this content in the most intuitive, contextual way during the live game."

The World Cup showed the direction of travel. More activity than ever was bet on player props and betbuilders, increasingly built and settled in-play rather than pre-match.

How do you deliver contextual, real-time opportunities across betbuilder, cash-out, price boosts, player shot markets and Subs Play On? How do you remove friction when customers want to place a bet before a corner or during stoppage time?

It’s not just about adding more market-types. What separates a good in-play football product from a great one is packaging and delivering this content in the most intuitive, contextual way during the live game.

Sportsbooks need to provide all of these features, and result them in real-time, without friction, even in highly-complex moments like before a corner or deep into stoppage time. But this is easier said than done.

Through the summer, we continued to invest in our football trading service. It’s all built on our core data, models and official content.

Cash-out is one example worth highlighting. It’s become a base expectation, but the growth of player betting makes operating a cash-out product much more complex.

What really matters with cash-out is speed and availability. If you bet on an accumulator on the Premier League next Saturday, and can’t see your cash-out price because of a suspension or an internal risk trigger, this is the kind of moment that erodes trust and leads to dissatisfied customers, affecting retention.

mins of extra cash-out availability

This is exactly why we’ve extended our High-Availability Cash-Out (HACO) functionality to all the football markets we offer. Delivering over three extra minutes of availability compared to other cash-out solutions, it keeps your markets open independent of trading state, so your customers can cash-out early more of the time.

As with all of our pricing across pre-match, in-play, betbuilder and player markets, HACO is underpinned by the same, singular trading model.

Together, it means total pricing accuracy and consistency across your football product, with maximum uptime and the best pricing, in one place. And it’s all updated and resulted using high-quality official live sports data.

market uptime on the EFL Championship

Stoppage time was a prime example of where in-play betting turnover can be won and lost last weekend.

Late-game events are one of the biggest drivers of market suspension and pricing misalignment, as suppliers and operators protect against late-game chaos – but they’re also an increasingly popular period to bet. The old model of reverting to suspending markets in the final moments no longer needs to be the case.

Recently, we enhanced our football trading model with a new stoppage time functionality that automatically assesses in-game stoppages to forecast match length and adjust pricing accordingly.

Middlesbrough, Burnley and Cardiff all scored late goals, and Genius Sports customers were able to confidently update their betting markets and cash-out offers right up until the final whistle. It meant that, once again, we delivered the 98%+ market uptime across the Championship.

As with HACO, more stoppage time availability is just another benefit of Genius’ football product. Through one model, you get optimised pricing across pre-match, in-play, betbuilder and player markets. For many operators, those odds adjustments become even sharper through our Edge software, which continuously adjusts pricing based on liabilities as every bet is placed.

With the Premier League and Serie A kicking-off this weekend, the 2026/27 season is the perfect opportunity for operators to level-up their in-play football product, at a time when player betting is dominant and customers want total control.
