Prior to 2015, the National Basketball League Australia was struggling to sell its broadcast rights. Instead, they prioritised creating a leading digital product for its fans, providing an NBA level of statistics, including over 25 years’ worth of historic data.

However, the NBL lacked a technology infrastructure that could harness their data’s value and integrate with their existing systems.

In 2015, Genius Sports was selected to underpin the NBL’s digital technology infrastructure. Both parties envisioned creating an API-based model that combined proven technology in FIBA LiveStats and FIBA Organizer with a flexible distribution arm to maximise the reach of the NBL’s data.

Genius Sports and the NBL have formed one of the most innovative partnerships in basketball.

The league has full control over its data and is harnessing real-time statistics to drive new levels of fan engagement across its website, mobile app, in-stadia scoreboards, fantasy sports site and more. The new NBL website has enjoyed a 200% increase in traffic with the customised GameCentres receiving millions of views each season.
